“The Warlord’s daughter curtsied to just the degree proper for a princess to greet a king—not an inch more. Instead of modestly looking down, she kept her eyes on Jon’s. ‘I am “Highness” no longer, your Majesty. My father is dead, and I am an exile. I hope to become your Majesty’s loyal, low-born subject.’ She inclined her head graciously, her curtsey not wobbling an iota.”

- Lioness Rampant, Tamora Pierce

I’ve recently come across a bunch of people seeing Thayet as coming from an Asian background AND MY EYES HAVE BEEN OPENED

I NEVER WANT TO GO BACK TO THE FOOL I WAS TRYING TO IMAGINE IN MY HEAD BEFORE.

… I did not picture her Asian. Did I miss something?

Usually when the term “Warlord” is used, it has something to do with the Chinese I believe. Also, her name has Jian in it, which is the Chinese term for a double-edged straight sword.

Good to know. But I just didn’t picture her Asian. And now I can’t get my thayet out of my head :c

Hi! I’m the one who did the original fancasting, for thayet. I made a post about why I fancasted her as Asian, and thought you might like to read it!

IN REGARDS TO MY FANCASTING OF THAYET AS ASIAN

(because I know that there are some people who see her as white)
Thayet is described in the books as having ivory skin and jet black hair, and when I was reading Lioness Rampant as a little girl I imagined her specifically as a very pale-skinned Taiwanese aborigine or Hakka Taiwanese, perhaps because of the fact that I’m half-Taiwanese half-Hong-Kong-ese (is Hong-Kong-nese even a word though??) myself, and I knew girls who looked almost exactly like the book’s description of Thayet.
Also, I may be wrong, but I remember Thayet being Sarain rather than K’miri, and Tamora Pierce herself described Saren culture as a mix of Eastern lands culture and a dash of Vietnamese/Cambodian cultureso I sort of think fancasting Thayet as Taiwanese works.
And more importantly, I think that the entire fantasy genre can be improved by having more diversified POC casts, because even with POC characters, Southeast Asians and East Asians rarely get represented in fantasy.

elementary canon quotes:

“You will not apply my precept,” he said, shaking his head. “How often have I said to you that when you have eliminated the impossible whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth?”

“It is an old maxim of mine that when you have excluded the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.”

The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet

“We must fall back upon the old axiom that when all other contingencies fail, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.”

The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans

“That process,” said I, “starts upon the supposition that when you have eliminated all which is impossible, then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.”

“‎Travel is little beds and cramped bathrooms. It’s old television sets and slow Internet connections. Travel is extraordinary conversations with ordinary people. It’s waiters, gas station attendants, and housekeepers becoming the most interesting people in the world. It’s churches that are compelling enough to enter. It’s McDonald’s being a luxury. It’s the realization that you may have been born in the wrong country. Travel is a smile that leads to a conversation in broken English. It’s the epiphany that pretty girls smile the same way all over the world. Travel is tipping 10% and being embraced for it. Travel is the same white T-shirt again tomorrow. Travel is accented sex after good wine and too many unfiltered cigarettes. Travel is flowing in the back of a bus with giggly strangers. It’s a street full of bearded backpackers looking down at maps. Travel is wishing for one more bite of whatever that just was. It’s the rediscovery of walking somewhere. It’s sharing a bottle of liquor on an overnight train with a new friend. Travel is ‘Maybe I don’t have to do it that way when I get back home.’”
